Sitting in an Italian mountain village the poet and script writer Tonino Guerra tell us a fairy tale about artist´s brushes.
During the Second World War he was imprisoned in a concentration camp. To fight his fear of death he starts to write poems in romagnolo, the local language from the part of Italy where he was born..
As a miracle he survives, publishes the poems och sends the book to the painter Girogio Morandi (1890-1964).
Morandi likes the poems and Guerra wants to visit him in his studio. But the painter doesn´t want any intruders .
The winter comes with gray clouds. After a couple of months the painter all of a sudden opens the doors and the poet meets a microcosmos of dust, associations and terracotta pots with paint brushes. When the poet wants to throw away some of the brushes the reaction from the painter is harsh and he declares that a brush has a life because of the pictures it shaped. You can not just throw it away as waste. They have been my friends, explains the painter.
Andreas Kassel and Tonino Guerra brings us a story about the artist and his beloved instruments.
Tonino Guerra (1820-) painter, poet and script writer to more than 120 films (among the directors you find De Sica, Antonioni, Fellinii, Tarkovsky, The Taviani Brothers, Rosi, Angelopoulos and Gitai).
